The current legal framework in our country fails to adequately address the needs and vulnerabilities of senior citizens. While there are provisions in place to protect young individuals and specific laws catering to the welfare of women, there is a noticeable absence of comprehensive measures dedicated to the well-being of senior citizens, aside from the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007.
With the population of senior citizens steadily increasing, it has become imperative to introduce specialized legislation aimed at providing them with the necessary support and protection. Crimes committed against the elderly, such as theft, robbery, and fraud, pose unique challenges as they are often more vulnerable and less capable of defending themselves or recovering from the losses incurred.
Unlike incidents involving younger victims, crimes against senior citizens can have particularly devastating consequences, leaving them feeling helpless and struggling to cope with the aftermath. While legal recourse is available, the process can be arduous, especially for those lacking adequate support systems to help them rebuild their lives.
It is high time that our laws are amended to include stronger provisions specifically tailored to address the needs of senior citizens and to hold perpetrators of such crimes accountable. This issue warrants thorough deliberation, and it is hoped that forums like the Mumbai Citizen Forum will facilitate meaningful discussions and advocacy towards this end.
